Five varieties of tomatoes fresh from the garden today. Martino Roma, Polish Linguisa, Jersey Devil, Olpaka, and Heidi.
We are going to get lots of sunflower seeds from this huge flower. No wonder it's called Mammoth.

Tomato Seeds in Flats
Last weekend I built these seed flats and today I planted my tomato seeds. I planted my chile pepper seeds about 4 weeks ago. You can kind of see it under the shade cloth to the right. Most of those have germinated. Peppers take a lot longer to get start then tomatoes.
This is a photo of my gardening notebook where I detail what I planted, when, where and how. I will also keep track of which plants do better than others, when the first tomatoes are harvested and many other details. These should be ready to plant in the garden by May 1 give or take a week.

Enjoying the garden
Lu was having a nice day in the garden while I cleaned up and planted some winter crops. I planted peas, carrots, broccoli and some herbs.
I'm always happy when I find a honey bee enjoying the stuff I planted. There is lots of pollen on this little guy.

The afternoon light was just right to take a still life photo of my harvest. Pomegranates, peepers and cucumbers. It made me feel like painting again.
The tomato still life wasn't as pretty, but I'm just happy to still have good tomatoes to eat.

Harvests
Cosmo seeds
Blue Lake Pole beans are still growing well. I like that it has both yellow and white flowers on the same plant.
And I let some dry out, so I will have seeds for next year.
Here are the seeds that I harvested so far this year. I hope I'll have enough seeds to share this year with other members of Seed Savers. I would need at least 25-30 seeds for each order. Right now I have about 200 seeds.

Happy Quails
I'll probably only have another month to harvet tomatoes. Anna Russian and Orange Strawberry are not really producing any new tomatoes. The Brandywines are still doing OK. I picked about 20 tomatoes yesterday.
This is what it looks like when I'm processing them.
I hate having seeds in my tomato sauce, so I try to get them all out before cooking them. I tried a food mill, but I didn't like the results.
Earlier this week I had lunch at Evvia in Palo Alto. It's a Greek restaurant that has Saghanaki. Saghanaki is pan fried Kefalograviera cheese & padron peppers with oregano & lemon. Emily liked the peppers so much that I thought I would try to grow some next year. I found out the resturant's source for Pimientos de Padrón and went to the farmers market this weekend to buy some. The actual Pimientos de Padróns are smaller than the ones I bought, but I figured the seeds would not be developed enough to save. These are the same peppers just more mature. I hope I can save some of the seeds to grow a few plants next summer. Of course, I will share with Emily. You can find the recipe for the peppers on the Happy Quail Farms site.

Freakish tomatoes
The sunflowers leaves are being chewed on, but I'm sure the seeds are developing nicely anyway.
This is a flower from a leek. The variety is Prizetaker. If you look at the bigger image you can see a little bee on the purple flowers.
I harvested many tomatoes today. I thought I would start you off with the normal looking ones and then get to the freaks. This is Brandywine O.T.V. (Off the Vine) with a potato leaf. It is the only red variety I planted this year.
Brandywine from Croatia. They are pink with a regular leaf. It is a rare variety, only available from Santa Clara Master Gardeners. I hope to save seeds from it, so I can grow from my own seeds.
Anna Russian. By far, the most productive of my tomatoes so far this year.
Now some of the freaks. This is Ed's Millennium. I picked one normal looking tomato and a crazy looking monster tomato. I have more pictures below.
It doesn't look so scary on the plant.
On the food scale it weighs 1 pound, 8.5 ounces. That's a big tomato!!!

One of the Anna Russian's is looking a little bit like an alien too. I'm sure they will taste great.

Sunflower and Water lily
Today's sunflower photo does not look much different from yesterday's.
This water lily is a very pale yellow. It is about 8 inches across.
I wanted to show how much the water lily rises out of the water.
We ate the 2 tomatoes last night tossed with some pasta, olive oil, herbs and garlic. The tomatoes were almost completely solid. Very few seeds.
Today's sunflower photo does not look much different from yesterday's.

Sunflower & Tomato Nets
I decided to keep taking photos of the sunflower until I get bored with it. So far I still like it.
This might actually be the first ripe tomato of the year. It was hiding in the lower part of the plant. It is also an Anna Russian. Much bigger than the first.
This is a net I made to keep the tomato flowers from cross-pollinating. I want to save seeds from the tomato plants I bought from Master Gardeners this year. I'm also saving seeds from the pepper plants I bought. They are all open-pollinated plants, so the seeds will be true to the original plant.
I thought this was a pretty picture of the tomato flower in one of the nets.

Tomatoes
The first, almost red, tomato of the year. Anna Russian is an oxheart heirloom.
Our fence is about 6 feet high. The Orange Strawberry tomato is over 7 feet high now (in back.) In front is Anna Russian and 3 pepper plants to the left.Planted on 4/13 from transplants.
I have 2 different Brandywine varieties growing this year. The one in front is OTV (Off The Vine) and in back is Brandywine from Croatia.Planted on 4/13 from transplants.
There are 4 tomatoes here and a small pepper in front. Starting from the back is Ed's Millennium (4/20), then Caspian Pink(4/20), and 2 Polish Linguisa (5/4).
